Global Wellness Day

Today, 10th June, is Global Wellness Day. Wellness means different things to different people, but I thought I’d share with you 5 things which make me feel happy!

 

1. Move it, move it!

 

 

The benefits of exercise for your physical and mental health are well documented and it’s no secret I love going for a run, it never fails to make me feel great. I sometimes get stuck in a bit of a rut, so I like having a goal (hello York Marathon – see you in October!) as it gives me something to work towards. I also love running with friends – it's social, makes you run faster and you’ve earnt brunch afterwards!

 

2. Be part of something bigger.

 

One of the things I miss most about London is volunteering at a Riding for the Disabled Group. The sense of community and achievement is brilliant and I’ve made lovely friends too. There’s loads of ways to get involved in something bigger than you are – be that volunteering, joining a new club or getting involved in your community. I’m looking forward to improving my very rusty hockey skills next season!

 

3. Time Outdoors.

 

I love spending time outdoors – the fresh air and sunshine never fail to make me happy. Even if it’s cold and miserable (and it feels cold quite often up here in Yorkshire!) I like to spend some time outdoors in daylight each day. Whether it’s going for a walk watching the seasons change in the countryside or attempting to grow vegetables in the garden time outdoors makes me feel better. Even when I lived in London I grew herbs on the windowsills and tomatoes on the balcony – it’s surprising what you can grow in a tiny space and how much better, and more satisfying, your food tastes!

 

4. Do what makes you happy.

 

Everyone has something that makes them happy – a hobby, sport or pastime. Whatever it is, make time to do it regularly!

 

5. You can do anything, but not everything.

 

Running a start up means I’m usually pretty short on time, so I have to remind myself not to let the things that make me happy, such as running, or spending time with friends, get pushed down my priorities list. When I skip things like cooking a nice meal, or going to yoga, I actually get less efficient when I’m working! Finding the right balance is hard, but I've realised you can’t do everything, and being organised and making time for the things which are important to you is key to finding that balance.
